Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What is this tool?
This is an online PNG image compression tool that runs entirely in your browser. It reduces the file size of PNGs using advanced algorithms while maintaining the highest possible quality. Most importantly, the entire process is done locally; your images are never uploaded to any server, ensuring 100% privacy and security.
How to use this tool?
  1. Upload Image: Drag and drop your PNG file into the dashed box, or click the 'Browse File' button to upload.
  2. Adjust Quality: After the image is uploaded, you can use the 'Compression Quality' slider below to adjust the compression level. A lower value results in higher compression but may also reduce image quality.
  3. Compare in Real-time: Drag the slider on the image left and right to instantly compare the visual difference between the compressed (left) and original (right) images.
  4. Download Image: Once you are satisfied with the result, click the 'Download Image' button to save the compressed file.
What is the generally recommended compression quality?
It's a trade-off between file size and image quality, and there's no single correct answer. Here are some general recommendations:
  • A quality setting between 0.7 - 0.9 is recommended. This range usually provides good compression without any noticeable loss of quality to the naked eye.
  • It's advisable to maintain a higher quality (e.g., 0.85 or above) to avoid visible color banding or distortion.
  • If you have strict requirements for file size, you can try lowering the quality to 0.1 - 0.4. This will significantly reduce the file size, but be sure to carefully check the image quality with the comparison slider to ensure it's acceptable.
Best Practice: Always use the comparison feature to find the perfect balance that suits your needs.
Is the compression lossy or lossless?
This tool uses a lossy compression strategy for PNGs. It intelligently reduces the number of colors in the image through a technique called 'color quantization,' achieving a higher compression ratio than traditional lossless compression. At higher quality settings, this 'loss' is often imperceptible to the human eye. If you set the quality to 1, the tool will attempt a near-lossless compression.
